Witches’ Ladders and the Old Art of Knot Magic

There is something deeply symbolic about tying a knot.

A loose cord becomes joined. Something intangible is given a physical form. A thought, hope or intention is held in place by the simple movement of our hands.

This idea lies at the heart of knot magic and the tradition commonly known as the witches’ ladder.

What Is a Witches’ Ladder?

A witches’ ladder is created by tying a series of knots into a length of cord, ribbon or thread. Each knot represents part of an intention and is tied with focus, spoken words or quiet contemplation.

Despite its name, it is not a ladder in the ordinary sense. The knots form symbolic steps, with each one building upon the last until the intention is considered complete.

Some witches’ ladders are made from a single cord. Others may include several strands woven together. Modern practitioners sometimes add beads, charms, feathers or other meaningful objects, although these are not necessary.

The most important element is the intention being woven into it.

The Magic Within the Knot

Knot magic can be incredibly simple.

You do not need elaborate tools, expensive ingredients or a carefully prepared altar. All you need is a piece of cord and a clear sense of what you wish to create, encourage or strengthen within your life.

As each knot is tied, your attention is drawn away from distraction and towards one particular purpose. The physical action helps to anchor the thought.

The knot becomes a reminder of the moment in which that intention was made.

This is one of the reasons simple forms of folk magic can feel so powerful. They engage both the mind and the hands. We are not merely thinking about change. We are creating something that represents it.

Why Are Nine Knots Used?

Many witches’ ladders are created using nine knots.

Nine has long been associated with completion, fulfilment and the ending of a cycle. It is the final single digit number, making it a natural symbol of something reaching its full form.

With each knot, the intention is gathered, strengthened and stored within the cord. By the ninth knot, the sequence is complete and the intention has been fully woven into the ladder.

You do not have to use nine knots. Three is also a meaningful number within many spiritual traditions, while other people choose a number that holds personal significance.

There are very few rigid rules within this kind of practice. Meaning and intention matter more than perfection.

How to Create Your Own Witches’ Ladder

Begin by choosing a piece of cord, ribbon or natural thread.

You may wish to select a colour connected with your intention. Green might represent growth, abundance or healing. Red may represent confidence, courage or passion. Blue might be chosen for peace, communication or emotional balance.

You can also simply use whatever you already have.

Sit somewhere quiet and take a few moments to consider your intention. Try to make it clear, positive and focused upon your own life.

Rather than attempting to control another person, think about the qualities, opportunities or changes you would like to welcome.

For example:

“I welcome confidence and courage.”

“I create greater peace within my life.”

“I am open to new opportunities.”

“I trust myself to take the next step.”

Hold the cord between your hands and begin tying your knots slowly. As you create each one, repeat your intention, speak a line of the rhyme below or simply focus upon the feeling you wish to create.

A Nine Knot Witches’ Ladder Rhyme

By knot of one, the spell’s begun.

By knot of two, my wish comes true.

By knot of three, so shall it be.

By knot of four, my spell is law.

By knot of five, my wish will thrive.

By knot of six, this spell I fix.

By knot of seven, blessings from Heaven.

By knot of eight, I own my fate.

By knot of nine, the spell is mine.

You can use these words exactly as they are or change them to suit your own intention. Spoken words often feel more meaningful when they sound natural to the person saying them.

What Should You Do With It Afterwards?

Once your witches’ ladder is complete, you might place it somewhere private, carry it with you or hang it in a meaningful part of your home.

Some people keep the ladder until their intention has come to pass. Others use it as a continuing symbol of protection, confidence or personal growth.

You may also choose to untie the knots at a later date. This can represent releasing an intention, letting go of something that has been completed or freeing yourself from an old pattern.

The cord itself does not need to be treated as something frightening or untouchable. It is a personal object that holds the meaning you have given to it.

Weaving Intention Into Everyday Life

Knot magic reminds us that the old ways were often practical and accessible.

Magic did not always require grand ceremonies. It could be found in ordinary materials and familiar actions. Tying, weaving, stirring, sweeping and lighting the evening fire could all become meaningful when carried out with purpose.

Perhaps that is why these practices still speak to us.

In a world filled with noise and constant distraction, tying a knot asks us to pause. It asks us to choose a thought and remain with it for a moment.

A length of cord may appear ordinary, but when it is held with intention, it becomes a record of a promise made to ourselves.

One knot at a time.
